Balata Donkey - By Haneen project - Nablus - Palestine

Black and multi coloured strips
A cute stuffed donkey, made with a beautiful combination of Syrian fabrics.

The Haneen Project was established in 2007 in the Balata refugee camp, Nablus. This initiative was formed by a group of women who use their skills in handicraft production to create a sustainable source of income to help address the financial needs of families striving to provide food, education, and care for their loved ones.

The Arabic name, Haneen (meaning 'longing'), symbolises the refugees’ yearning for their ancestral homeland and cultural heritage.

Haneen's skilled embroiderers create distinctive, beautiful products. They use a wide array of stitching techniques, in addition to cross-stitching, and incorporate unique regional materials like Syrian satin or Hebron leather into their designs. Experimenting with techniques and new designs makes standout from other groups

Balata is the largest of the 19 Palestinian refugee camps in the West Bank. Its 22,000 residents face severe overcrowding, poor infrastructure, poverty, and violence.
